Stacey Smith, ETC
WaferTech, located in Camas, Washington, is the largest semiconductor integrated circuit foundry in the United States and is one of Clark County’s CTR affected employers. Stacey Smith, WaferTech’s enthusiastic Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) has been promoting CTR at the worksite since March, 2006. She has been instrumental in implementing some new and exciting changes to WaferTech’s CTR program.
Recently WaferTech added computer kiosks in their cafeteria with direct links to numerous CTR Web sites, such as Wheel Options, CarpoolMatchNW.org, and the new ClarkCommute.org. Additionally, they’ve started a Commuter of the Quarter program recognizing employees who use an alternative commute to work. WaferTech has committed to subsidizing transit by offering C-TRAN tickets to their employees at a discounted rate available in their company store.
With C-TRAN’s Connector serving WaferTech, bicyclists can combine a bus/bike commute and take advantage of WaferTech’s covered bicycle parking, showers, and lockers. Not to mention, there is a cafeteria on site with access to an ATM machine and post office services. These CTR elements, along with employees working compressed work schedules all adds-up to a strong CTR program.
Stacey thinks the biggest challenge she faces when promoting CTR, is the reluctance of employees to give up the “feeling of ultimate control over their arrival and departure times in their structured working environment.” One way Stacey works to overcome this concern is to promote the CTR Guaranteed Ride Home program to employees, reminding them there is a way home in the event of an emergency.
